Demystifying the Deep-Rooted Racial and Gender Inequality in STEM Fields

Abstract: This paper examines the causes and impacts of racial and gender disparities in STEM, with a focus on the unique challenges faced by women of color. Despite recent attention on access issues in STEM, women of color remain highly underrepresented and face entrenched race-gender discrimination, resulting in pressure to outperform male peers to validate their competence. The scarcity of role models and support further isolates them, while employment discrimination, such as a $23,653 annual earnings gap between Black women and white men, limits career advancement. Through a literature review, this study seeks to highlight these barriers, spark dialogue on representation, and propose solutions to support women of color in STEM, advocating for a more diverse and equitable future.
